Michael K. Green Skatepark
City: Long Beach, California
Size: 8,000 sq ft
Year Built: 2010
On Sunday, January 17th, the City of Long Beach officially opened its brand new facility where youth can exercise their passions and distract themselves from the hardships of living in what 1st District Councilman Robert Garcia called “one of the most dense and poor communities in Long Beach.” The new skatepark, which replaced existing equipment and expanded upon the site’s footprint, is an 8,000 sq. ft. hybrid style skatepark, consisting of TrueRide ramps and precision-cast Spohncrete features. The park’s design was broken down into a beginner section, an advanced section with a large stair set, and a transition section which features a 32’ wide mini-ramp.
The grand opening featured professional skating demos, speeches from influential community members, and Mike Vallely, a professional skateboarder and Long Beach native. Councilman Garcia also announced his plan to name the facility the Michael K. Green Skatepark after Black Mike, an influential Long Beach local who was shot and killed a few years prior.
