FLAT SLAB RENOVATION
As the skatepark industry continues its gradual shift toward custom concrete terrain, many cities with existing ramp parks on flat asphalt or concrete slabs have found themselves wondering how to upgrade.
For many, the initial thought is to demolish the existing concrete slab and begin from scratch. With Spohn Ranch’s advanced construction methods, however, existing flat slabs can be transformed into world class skateparks with the complex style of terrain today’s skaters are looking for. If the existing slab remains in good condition, the environmentally conscious solution is to recycle the concrete, either by using it as footing or by plugging in new features.
Eliminating the need for costly site work and excavation, Spohn Ranch utilizes both precision-cast technology and traditional cast-in-place construction to revitalize dilapidated ramp parks. With minor cutting, new concrete terrain can be seamlessly integrated into the existing slab. The complex elevation changes that were lacking during the park’s back and forth ramp days, are now made possible by building up areas with fill or geo-foam blocks.
Spohn Ranch has successfully used this technique in cities across the United Sates, including our home city of Los Angeles where we transformed an aging ramp park into a destination skate plaza.
