Final Design Revealed for West Des Moines Skatepark

West Des Moines’, Iowa first concrete skatepark breaks ground later this month at American Legion Park.

The 5,000 square foot skatepark will transform a linear footprint formerly occupied by a wooden half-pipe that was removed in 2019 due to maintenance issues. Recognizing Spohn Ranch’s highly-regarded skatepark design-build portfolio across Iowa, including Young’s Park Skatepark and Bailey Park Skatepark, the City of West Des Moines approached Spohn Ranch shortly after removing the half-pipe.

Our work began with a public open house where local skateboarders provided input and voted for various styles of skatepark design. From there we created a modern layout with a variety of street-inspired elements including a curb cut with a concrete bollard and a handful of transition elements for continuous flow.

In addition to design development and construction documents, Spohn Ranch’s specialty craftsmen will execute a turnkey skatepark construction scope from earthwork through concrete. With good weather, we’ll be wrapping up in September, so stay tuned for updates!
