National City Skatepark builds a strong contrast

After a flurry of grand openings in 2014, San Diego County had a quiet 2015 skatepark season. 2016, however, is starting off with a bang thanks to the dedicated Spohn Ranch field crew in National City, California.  The new Kimball Park Skatepark will replace the City’s aging collection of metal ramps which had reached the end of their lifespan. With 10,000 square feet of smooth and finely-sculpted concrete, the new skatepark will offer a sharp contrast – for the better.

As a prime skatepark builder, Spohn Ranch’s scope includes grading, steel fabrication, forming, rebar installation, integral color, shotcrete and cast-in-place concrete. The site’s linear shape, sandwiched between a baseball diamond and drainage canal, made all of these trades a bit more challenging, but our veteran crew has kept the project on-budget and on-schedule.

With just a few more weeks of concrete and detail work remaining, we kindly ask that local skateboarders remain patient and stay out of the active construction site. When complete, the skatepark design will feature a multitude of stairs, handrails, ledges and just enough transition to keep the flow going. It will also be lit for nighttime use – a key feature during the winter months when the sun sets early.
