Guantanamo Bay Skatepark
When the US Navy’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation Program identified skateboarding as a positive activity to enhance the morale of sailors and their families, they enlisted Spohn Ranch’s help to build a concrete bowl on base. With limited access to materials and a strict one-week window to be on base, our innovative pre-cast concrete technology proved to be the perfect solution.
Using this state-of-the-art technology, we engineered and then cast 10+ sections of the bowl that were loaded onto a barge and sent to Guantanamo Bay. Mark Bradford, our allotted one-man team, boarded a small twin-engine airplane and flew to the base where he met the concrete pieces.
Using a 100-ton crane, Mark led a local crew in setting the concrete pieces in place. After some detail work including caulking and welding, Mark then led the local crew in pouring a concrete floor and deck – completing the project in a mere 5 days.
