Ocean City, New Jersey design/build in motion

Several years after a modest collection of ramps was demolished, City leaders and local skateboarders came together in support of a modern concrete landscape that would become a source of pride.  As funding fell into place, a critical next step was hiring a skatepark designer who was respected within the New Jersey scene and who knew their way around the State’s myriad of rules and regulations.  With recent projects in Sea Isle City, Woodbridge and Elizabeth already under our belt, Spohn Ranch became the clear choice.

During our design process, we led several workshops where we collaborated closely with local skateboarders to create a skatepark design that reflected the unique makeup of the community.  OC’s surf culture was a dominant theme, making a surf-inspired snake run and bowl top priorities. Many local surfer/skateboarders cross-trained on backyard mini-ramps and also requested a professionally-built concrete version where they could progress their skills.  Ensuring the skatepark design didn’t cater to just one style of skateboarding though, we skillfully integrated street elements like stairs, manual pads and ledges.

The final skatepark design, dubbed the “Cape May County Skatepark” is located just blocks from the beach, replacing an under-utilized parking lot.  When complete, it will host competitions and demonstrations – serving as entertainment for the thousands of summertime visitors, as well as a platform for regional talent to build a name for themselves.

Just as the City knew they needed a specialist during the design phase, they saw the benefits of a builder focused exclusively on skateparks and selected Spohn Ranch as the prime contractor for the construction portion of the project. The skatepark build is already underway with the goal of mid-summer grand opening celebration. Stay tuned to our website and social media accounts for updates.
