Spohn Ranch Builds CA’s First Concrete Pump Track

Both the PHR pump track and skatepark officially open to the public April 10!

San Diego’s North County is now home to state-of-the-art wheel-friendly spaces including a concrete pump track and a concrete skatepark. They comprise just a small part of the Pacific Highlands Ranch Community Park, which is located just east of Carmel Valley and broke ground in June of 2017. The complex will also include a five-acre turf field, a recreation center, a children’s playground and a dog park

For those new to the pump track concept, a pump track is a continuous circuit of rollers and banked turns where riders generate speed by “pumping” through the ups and downs of the various features.

The PHR (Pacific Highlands Ranch) pump track covers nearly 20,000 square feet with a variety of rollers, berms and intersecting lines. It’s also California’s first pump track to be constructed with concrete – the superior solution compared to other materials such as asphalt and dirt.

Spohn Ranch’s scope for this design/build project included design development (in collaboration with local bike rider and advocate Chris Powell), construction documents, earthwork, steel fabrication and expert placement of concrete/shotcrete.

With an extensive nationwide resume and previous experience building in San Diego County, Spohn Ranch Skateparks was a clear choice for the project’s designer and builder. Fresh off the success of our critically acclaimed National City Skatepark, anticipation has been steadily building for the PHR pump track and skatepark.

Early reviews for the pump track from the professional BMX and mountain bike community have been A+ – another testament to Spohn Ranch’s action sports expertise.

As soon as our construction crew wrapped up the pump track, they moved a couple hundred feet to a different part of the site to begin building a 5,000 square foot concrete skatepark. The skatepark includes all of the essentials – such as handrails, stair sets, transitions, manual pads and ledges.

Both the PHR pump track and skatepark officially open to the public April 10. Until then, please be patient for just a few more days and stay out of the site.
