SPOHN RANCH ENDS IOWA’S SKATEPARK FAMINE

Do you think John Wayne would have enjoyed the Winterset Skatepark as a kid? We do and you will too.

In 2010 Spohn Ranch began working with local non-profit “Friends of the Winterset Area Skatepark”. We helped with site analysis, design and fundraising, but also guided them through the ups and downs of nearly a decade-long effort.

When the funding finally came together (thanks in part to $40K in bottle/can deposits), the non-profit and the City of Winterset demanded a skatepark builder with the ability to execute a skatepark project from start to finish. With previous Iowa skateparks under our belt, Spohn Ranch was the clear choice.

Now, Winterset is not only the birthplace of the Oscar-winning movie star John Wayne but also the Winterset Skatepark. Completed in May of 2017, the Winterset Skatepark has received statewide praise from two, four and eight wheel enthusiasts.

With quarter-pipes lining each end, this 6,000 square foot concrete skatepark is all about “flow”. The quarter-pipe on the east end also features a “covered bridge” paying tribute to Winterset’s iconic covered bridges – made famous by the “Bridges of Madison County” film.

A banked wall retains the site’s natural topography and flows into a mix of street elements including stairs, an a-frame and a slanted manual pad.
