Butterfly Theme Sets El Monte Skatepark Apart

On October 24th Spohn Ranch and the City of El Monte celebrated the official grand opening of El Monte’s new 7,000 square foot concrete skatepark at Gibson Mariposa Park.

Our design-build project was funded in part by the City of El Monte’s Art in Public Places program, meaning we would have to elevate beyond the grey blob of concrete typical in skatepark design. Inspired by the existing park’s butterfly theme, we continued that aesthetic with a one-of-a-kind “butterfly bowl” and colored “butterfly stripes” radiating throughout the skatepark. The “butterfly bowl” anchors the skatepark, but is surrounded by a variety of modern street elements like stairs, grind rails and manual pads.

In addition to designing one of Los Angeles County’s most artistic skateparks, Spohn Ranch’s scope included demolition, drainage, earthwork, steel, concrete/shotcrete, security lighting and landscaping.

Thank you to our talented craftsmen who brought this skatepark design to life and professional skateboarder Maurio McCoy for the final “quality control” test.
