WORTH THE WAIT: NEW MANHATTAN BEACH SKATEPARK

Manhattan Beach skateboarders have long sought a place to call their own. For years, they’ve had to make due with skateparks in El Segundo, Venice, Gardena and Hermosa Beach – a long journey for a young skateboarder.

“The city is behind the times by about two decades.  Every other city around us has a skate park. Every few years, a new group of kids gathers petition signatures and makes it way through city government armed with idealism and the goal of decriminalizing their sport. Sadly, each group hits a dead end with City Council.” said Manhattan Beach mom Elise Johnson, who started skateboarding in 1979.

Dating back to 2013, Spohn Ranch helped the City of Manhattan Beach analyze sites, host public input meetings and conduct a skatepark feasibility study. Open space within City limits was limited, making the process challenging, but the City ultimately landed on Marine Avenue Park as the designated home for their first skatepark.
“This has been a long journey over decades. It’s been a substantial community process, which ultimately led to this location,” Councilman David Lesser said.

The skatepark will be located in the northeast corner of Marine Avenue Park, just past the baseball diamond’s outfield and adjacent to Manhattan Beach Studios.
The exact skatepark address is 1625 Marine Ave. Manhattan Beach, CA 90266.

The 6,000 square foot concrete skatepark will consist of state-of-the-art terrain. Transition elements will line the perimeter of the skatepark and feed a street section in the center with stairs, rails and ledges.
